At sea aboard USS Essex (LHD 2), 16 January 2003 — An MH-60S Knight Hawk, attached to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Five (HC-5), takes off from the ship’s flight deck during Deck Landing Qualifications. HC-5 provides the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and embarked Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) with airborne search and rescue capability, as one of the Navy’s only forward deployed search and rescue helicopter squadrons. Essex and the embarked MEU are currently conducting biannual Training in an Urban Environment Exercise.
